if you've never programmed before, this would be a great start. vb provides as much or as little crap as you want to put up with, plus you can have really fun results. i can code a VB pong game with neat graphics and shit in less time than i can code something "less fun" in a real language. like a program that adds fractions or some crap in c++. after that, do something else. i personally think adding fractions is more fun than pong, but i'm dorky. we actually had to do a pong game in class last semester, i think i was the only one to use trig functions to accomplish the task.
