Seriously, it should be noted that there are languages that give you a better paradigm. Trying something like C#, Java or Python, those would be my recommendation.

If you wanna make a web application you can should learn HTML, CSS, JavaScript and one server side scripting.

My choice for server side scripting is JSP.

PHP poisons you really, you get used to stuff that is very dfferent from other languages. Variables, for example, are '$variable' in PHP, just about every other language it would just be 'variable'.
(I sure hope that It would be pointless to point out that you would of course remove the quotes...)

But, it is just about the easiest language to learn.

PHP borrows from C++, Java and Perl. The $variable thing, for example, is a Perl thingy. Problem is, the PHP API is pretty sloppy, though it does get the job done. Seriously, I'd recommend one of three languages to start with: C++, C# or Python. It doesn't matter which - you'll end up learning all three anyway if you pursue programming as a career.
