Hi,

i suggest you to use c++ for your game engine.
OpenGL and OpenAL (graphic & audio APIs) are cross-platform and you can use your code on Windows and Unix system.

2)
- 1: working engine, for engine ARCHITECTUREs you can take a look at www.flipcode.com or http://www.c4engine.com/c4engine/architecture.html
- 2: 3d models and levels textured or not...
- textures, sprites, GUI

3) i suggest you to take a look at follow sites:

http://www.gamedev.net/
http://www.flipcode.com/
http://www.gametutorials.com/
http://nehe.gamedev.net/ - the best OpenGL lessons ever ...

http://www.devmaster.net/wiki/Main_Page - i can take a look here too ...

if you writing for windows you have to know little Win32 API (basics like MessageBox() WinMain() and more ... )

that's is all for now,

P.S. about the C# ... if you're interested i have pdf ebook for creating games with C# and it's goooooooood ... and C# is easy language.

as far as 3d modeling is concerned you can check out blender3d. http://blender.org/cms/Home.2.0.html It h as a steep learning curve but it is free. Good luck.

I'd use an off-the-shelf 3D engine for Python, like Panda3D. Or you could buy a copy of Torque and used that.

Personally, I'd use C++ with OGRE. It's just so sexy.

By the way, if you don't want to start from scratch, DarkPlaces is an awsome engine.

I'm planning on getting the netwarriors in C book, and making that game. I then plan on trying to jump from c to c++, and then use the Ogre3d engine.
