Photo cataloguing

My dad has been getting more and more fed up with the way he files his photo's. He has been putting them in directories titled by the occasion which is fine for browsing but not very handy, for example if he wants to look find a picture of my brother.

So, he asked me (being a novice ASP programmer) if i could help him put together an application.

The catch: he doesn't have XP pro and is sceptical about bodging IIS to run on XP home edition and due to the nature of the application, it wouldnt be convenient for it to be hosted on the web.

So, i have put together a simple ASP appliction that pulls together files in a given directory and adds the file names to a database.
Labels can then be added to the photo's and they can be searched.

Which leaves me with the problem of getting the application to run on his machine.

I have 2 options:
1) Get him to buy XP pro and tun it on IIS
2) Learn a UI language that is capable of this and re-build it* - (i'm quite keen to give UI programming a go anyway)

*he uses XP home and i use 2k, not sure if this would cause problems building the app.

Any thoughts?

Why don't you just use a WAMP? I have it on XP Home AND XP Pro. Woiks fer me. And all free. Hard to beat the price and performance, I have to tell ya. I would think you wouldn't HAVE to go ASP, you might find the PHP comes in handy on your CV.

Thank you, yes this would be a very possible option - I know the basics of PHP and have been looking for an opportunity to try it out in more detail.

Do you have any tips for me if i he would prefer it to be done in a UI language though?

A user doesn't care what you use so long as it works as expected and doesn't drive him up the wall or the system out into the weeds to barf on its shoes. Functionality and quality are your job.

Some clients don't know this and insist on the use of petrified dog doo in their products. One just tugs one's forelock, says, "yessir", and charges more.

I'm a fan of PHP over MySQL myself...
