Favorite Programming Book

What is your favorite programming book you read and loved when you was reading it? I love Java, How to Program 5th Edition. By far, my favorite book on Java or just programming itself.

"Absolute beginner's guide to C" It was the first book that I actually understood what they were talking about. I highly recommend it, even if you dont want to code in C its still very good.

I once read Bruce Eckel's Thinking in Java once over the summer in preperation for the Java course at my school. I only got about half way through because at about the middle of the book he seemed to almost "slack off" in his writing. The explanations weren't as clear as in the beginning and I realize he was trying to get the reader to be thinking at a more advanced level but it is quite difficult on some of the new topics. Also his choice of vocabulary can be confusing at times. I should probebly mention I am not a Java programmer at all. The guy who was teaching Java at my school turned out to be a replacement for the real teacher who left for another school. This new guy didnt know an object from his ass.

I think the best book I've read though is Object-Oriented Programming in C++ by Robert Lafore. I originally planned to learn C++ at that time after going through my very short lived Java phase. I still know a moderate amount of C++ but it wasn't something I continued to excel in. Even if you aren't a C++ programmer, I would still recommend this book for learning about OOP. It helped me a LOT!!! I now consider my self quite skilled in PHP and C#. I have to admit that I never use OOP in PHP though, but you can't live without it in C#. Not to mention C# is a beatiful language as a whole. Not using OOP in C# is like eating steak without steak sauce.

I don't know if this counts - but my absolute favorite computer-related book is "The Shellcoders Handbook: Discovering and Exploiting Security Holes" followed in a close second by "The Database Hackers Handbook: Defending database servers"

In terms of strictly programming, I'd have to say "The C Programming Language, 2nd Edition." After that comes in "The Pragmatic Programmer: From Journyman to Master" and practically any of Knuth's books

The C Programming Language by K&R, as other people have mentioned, is also my favourite. It probably has an advantage over other books because C is such a simple language, but it was extremely concise and accurate. I really appreciate that in a programming book.

Is this topic going to repeat itself 300 thousand times?
