I wouldn't say so. BASIC, unlike every other language apart from Assembly that is still in common use, encourages GOTOs. There's a reason they're discouraged: spaghetti code. I would never recommend learning BASIC to anyone - it's not used any more in commercial situations, so there isn't even any financial gain to be had from it.

BASIC has function support - GOTO is normally not needed (although, like C, it can be used).

BASIC has changed a lot since Dijkstra wrote that - VB.NET is (apparently) almost a real language. Or as I read somewhere, C# dressed to look like BASIC.

I wasn't talking about VB .NET. As you say, it's simply verbose C#. I would definitely advise against VB 6 and lower though.
