I'm not too sure how it works, but wouldn't you just be able to use something like.. send packets to the domain name the user enters, and if nothing is recieved then its available, vice versa. That would be the lazy persons way of doing it, a little lie never hurt anyone

That doesn't work. Owning a domain-name does not necessarily mean you have a DNS entry pointing to a host behind it.

Example: ping www.leetnet.net

Can't do it, but its owned :o

I think you need to be domain reseller in order to do this. Or you have to have a form that points to a domain reseller (ie, the form is on your site but when they click ok it takes them to the godaddy site to see if the domain they picked is availible)

You would be lazy to code such a simple solution, but it would also be lieing to the person on some occasions, such as the one you mentioned about it just not being hosted at the moment.

Most reseller systems have search systems you can use. You need to do a whois query on that domain name.

http://ws.arin.net/cgi-bin/whois.pl for example

It gets a bit complicated if you want to code it all yourself as you have to deal with a few main registrars

For most cases though, become a domain name reseller and you should have access to their search system

How about make a form on the site and then point it to dnsstuff.com using their Domain Lookup?
