lol@ polyphemus.. Of course.. how stupid of me to not realize that all Windows operating systems are identical...

What I meant to say was that you may need a manufacturers disk for those versions of Windows that don't provide as wide a range of vendor specific hardware support.

In Windows >= 2000, right click on My Computer, click manage, and select the disk management snapin.

Since you didn't mention what your OS was, here is a reference from Microsoft for XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313348 Just ignore the intro stuff if you are not formatting a primary partition, otherwise the rest of the instructions are the same.

This is another helpful, all encompassing tut:

it doesnt show up on my computer

In the disk management screen, the top panel lists all physical disks and the partitions on them. You want to add a partition or format an existing one on the correct physical disk. It doesn't display by drive letter alone;empty space is displayed and my Linux partitions are listed as Unknown.

I think you need to read something that explains this a bit better. But here I go:

Firstly you'd partition your hard disk to split it up. As your using partitionmagic it would ask you for some details like type.and size in a popup box.

That would mean you have sorted out the space of where your partition is. Next you need to give it a filesystem as you are using windows, i'd go for FAT32 or NTFS.

Finally you have to mount the partition, this'll give it a drive letter and an icon in My Computer.

I don't own partition magic, but it should have menus and buttons to do all that.

There is an iso out there. It's called Hiren's Boot CD. Burn it to a disk and then reboot (Be sure to have boot to cd set) and it has several tools (Partitioning, dos, file managers, hard drive backups, etc.)

Could be a bad partition table, then.

Try the MMC Disk Management tool, as others have said. You might also want to try to drive on another computer, to ensure it is physically okay. Make sure it is jumpered correctly (master, slave, cable select; you probably want slave, though if you have an appropriate cable, you can use cable select, though you'll need to have the other IDE device on the cable also be jumpered to CS).
