well the only thing about setting it to a static ip would be that there isnt alot of ppl that have static ip's like most ppl on dial-up get a different ip every time they log on the internet and most cable and dsl ppl still have dynamic ips that change occationally. i know mine doesnt change very often but it does change so this wouldnt be the best way to go about this. i do like the idea of creating your own im system but the ip way of doing it mite be unrealistic unless all your friends only have static ips. just a thought tho
Ah... erm Now i need to think more
Thanks for the help

P2P
Please can i ask how this works and what it is?
Does it require a main server, because i am trying to avoid this so that it cuts out the middle man and goes from the sending PC to the recieving PC.

P2P - peer to peer, also known as filesharing. Think KaZaA. In fact, don't think KaZaA - it's a load of crap. Think of a decent P2P network, like WinMX. The way these work is that people with slow(secondary) connections connect to people with fast (primary) connections, and these primary "nodes" connect to each other. The only problem is that the entire network will not usually be connected together unless you have a very efficient node-searching algorithm.
