I'll tell you my situtation. when i first got my machine, i divided my HD into 2 partitions. 1 part. has something like 137 gigs and the other has something like 23 gigs. The box says 160 gig, but idk if that holds water. Now what i am trying to do is put Slack on the 23 gig part. and reinstall windows(if nessisary) onto the other partition. Is this possible? If so, how plz. I'm useing Win.XP pro. Now where do i type in cfdisk? And can i do all of this in the Slack partition setup?

That's because the hard drive manufacturers count a gig as 1,000,000,000 Bytes instead of 1,073,741,824 Bytes (2^30). They cheat! :p

When you put in the Slack CD it will come up to the boot: prompt, press enter then then when it asks you to login, type root then press enter. Then type cfdisk to open the cfdisk program. use it to Delete teh 23gig partition (if it has nothing good on it) and it will then be shown as "Free space" you can then continue with the tutorial.

Windows doesn't need to be reinstalled.

If you are installing to the machine you are on now, print out my guide so you can refer to it.

I thought that if you choose to delete a partition, it deleted the partition and the free space went back into the remaining partition? Or does the 23 gig partition stay in tact just with nothing on it?

The latter.
The first partition will stay the same but the rest (23 GB) will be free space.

NP, It requires one for Windows, which you shoudl have kept (your big one) and 2 for linux.

If you follow the tutorial it will explain exactly how to make those two partitions.
