We currently hire programmers with C and embedded SQL skills (Oracle) and either PeopleSoft or Indus Banner skills.

Unless you are doing system programming or realtime work, you will find most most jobs that require C almost always require <something else>, where something else is usually scripting languages, forms or windows development, and OS knowledge.

i meant to post this yesterday...if you ARE looking for a good project in your previous field, that allows as little or as much as you want to put into it as far as functionality goes, how about making your own operating system?

Thats a very good idea too. At the moment i am going to install linux and then start developing a test harness to send messages between processes.

For my own OS - i need to learn how to get linux to schedule processes and interrupts etc. Without doubt an interesting exercise. Hmmmm.

Thanks

Ringo

why did the teaching fail? Is it something you are passionate about at all or is that why it failed because you are not? If your interested in teaching people maybe you can try writing some educating software of some kind. If your confident enough in it you could donate it to a school to see if they like it and if they do add it to your portfolio or mention it during an interview. I think one way to stay passionate or get motivated in programming is to connect it to something your passionate or already motivated about in some other aspect of your life.

If a 10-year old book is tanking your motivation, buy a new book.

Hee hee - it is a 10 year old book!

Thanks to this forum i seem to have got a bit of spark back! This is my first post using linux - and it feels like home. Got an interview next week - a long time coming. Will be good practice even if i don't get the job.

Teaching didnt work because (only know about the UK) you have to work very hard and you get paid very little. I was hoping for some outside influence - like amazing job satisfaction that would make it worth while. Whilst it was very rewarding i still can't afford a house to live in - so until the goverment does something about it - im not doing it!

Thanks for your help - Ringo
