I got Thinking c++ volume 2 by Bruce Eckel but its rather baffling and confusing.

What would you suggest for other free books?

Hi gam3r
Your signature says you're learning VB 6.0. My suggestion is "Don't waste your time" with VB 6.0. Switch to VB .Net(better still C# .Net). Microsoft is no longer going to support VB 6.0 and anyways it's crappy.

I just bought a copy of C++ Primer Plus, Fifth Edition; by Stephen Prata from Borders yesterday. So far, it's been the easiest book to understand, it explains everything in GREAT and EXCRUTIATING detail. It's a great book for programmers like you and I to learn from. The price is around $49.99.

Like most everybody knows by now, I agree completely.

I am learning derived classes right now with no problems

thank god you didn't buy into stevengs's bruce eckel shit.

i said the author stated it was FOR C PROGRAMMERS, NOT n00bs. and he just kept posting like it was the fucking bible or something. (there's nothing wrong with the book, it's just not for newbies)...personally, since i printed them out, at least i'll have toilet paper if scotttissue goes broke.

hehe, that is the beauty, there is no 'buying' necessary

C++ was my first programming Language (Ok, I learned AtariBasic in 1982, but that was eons ago) and I learned it with Stroustrup. I found the book well conceived and not particularly difficult. I found Eckel's 'Thinking In Java' books very good. I have only read a few chapters of his C++ books, but they seemed a good bit 'simpler' than Stroustrup. How easy does it have to be before it is added to the "Dummies" series or becomes acceptable for this 'n00b' fella?

I can imagine if you start with volume 2, of a 2 volume series, you might be confusticated just a bit.

btw, y'all can call me Steven.

I found the Deitel and Deitel series C++ How to Program to be very easy to understand and informative for beginners. They give you good descriptions of problems, code examples and suggestions on what are good and bad programming practices. You've gotta pay for it though so I wouldn't jump on Deitel & Deitel unless a few more people recommend it.

i would suggest it, in fact, it's what my school uses as the intro c++ text.
