Depends on what you want out of a desktop. Windows is far less flexible than Linux, and despite many hours trying, I've never been able to get multiple desktops working under Windows as well as Linux natively supports them. KDE is just so much more customisable than Windows; I feel frustrated every time I find yet another thing that's easy to do with KDE, but difficult/impossible to do with Windows. I'm too much of a power-user for Windows.
Also, have you tried loading up any Java applets that are known to work, ColdDeath? Though, quite honestly, I've been a Java programmer for several years and I've never bothered learning how to program applets; I've honestly never come across a situation where I'd want to use them
