Maybe i'm old fashoned, but I love a good programming book. I hate reading pages and pages of text off a screen, it's much nicer to read through a book that explains what you want to know in plain english so you can understand it, grasp the concept, then start programming. Books you can easily take anywhere and pick up anytime, much easier than a laptop. If you want just the nuts and bolts and like reading screen off a text, you can completely learn the language @ php.net, no doubt. But I don't reccomend it.
I do though use php.net for refrence, don't know what I'd do without it
