My personal favorite free forum script is phpBB, but you'll need to have mySQL on your server to run it, and if you're not familiar with the database structure of your server, you'll want to have a MySQL administration console... it makes it a lot easier to manage your databases (free as well, but your webhost may charge for that service).

i know this is an old post but......... does it not defeat the purpose of having a help forum to redirect them to google before hand.... i work on a help desk and know that there are tons of people that would not know how to use google to search for things they wanted..... and if the "dumb question" bother you why not create a part of the forum where people who don't exactly what they are trying to ask or don't know about programing and that are just starting.

If a person can't use Google, they're not going to make much of a programmer. In the real world, where one gets a paycheck, one is expected to exhibit resourcefulness.

The problem is not "dumb questions." The problem is lazy people. Well, not lazy people, lazy is good, because it promotes efficiency and economy of action. The problem is people with an unwarranted sense of entitlement.

We don't care how ignorant people are. Ignorance is the natural state. An ignorant person who has attempted to solve his or her own problem will get plenty of help here.

A lot of us are not help-desk employees thumbing through a script for pre-packaged answers. When we provide prepackaged answers in a FAQ, people don't read it, and still ask the same question that has been answered innumerable times. That's the origin of the rule/suggestion to "Search First."

Our time, which is voluntarily spent, is spent more effectively if we address specific issues that a poster is having. If the need is for information, we may provide a link, or we may suggest that the same link could have been found independently by the poster (yeah, Google), which would have cut out the middleman and been more efficient, to begin with.

An answer like that is valuable to a thinking poster, regardless of newbiness. They'll learn how they should go about getting and keeping their job, when they get one.

Only those who are used to getting spoon fed, who are still hanging on the sugar-tit, would object to learning how to fend for themselves.

EDIT: Here's a perfect example from today's threads. Note that the answer is there, as well as an implicit suggestion regarding how to go about solving one's problems.
