Question about building a community

Greetings what should I start first if I want to create a community website? Can I create the website in XHTML, PHP/Mysql and CSS, and then add community features and access requirements? How hard / easy is that?

Also what do you think of CMS? Making your own CMS? Any really good info on making your own (Google results can be not so good sometimes)?

Any help would be appreciated. I can reply with more info if necessary.

It's very possible. However, it's also known as reinventing the wheel. For example, phpBB is an excellent piece of PHP-based forum software.

CMSes are easy. Just think about what you want to do logically.

I use phpBB, but I need to create a community website ressembling www.animemusicvideos.org, or deviantart.com , having the ability to comment and vote on different pages on different subjects. And perhaps add features later.

I don't understand your last line, are you saying it is easy to make your own?

You can use a lot of different technologies to do this, but the most common are PHP or ASP.NET, depending on what your system supports.

It supports PHP, no Windows server. I have installed Mambo, however was slightly unkeen to start working with it as I've heard some bad things about its community modules and features...I may just give it a try to see, however it would definitely be ***** if I make a huge thing and then it shows up it won't work with Mambo.

You mean we can create a CMS and community features with the use of php and mysql? Can I secure members logins and passes in a db? Can I use those to let them stay logged in, and post comments under their names, vote, and other features? How can I create a page that would be like an input for text and pictures to add as article, or encyclopedia page (ie making a CMS) and stating where it goes in the site structure? How much time do you think it'd take?

A lot of time for you as you seem new to the whole programming concept so therefore you would have to start at the basics and work from there, although depends on how fast you can work, and yes you can have secure sites by just using php and mysql, well some other security measures like SSL but thats more for secure transations.

Vaines,

Mambo is built on PHP and mySQL, so is PHPBB, so is this forum. Most of the big user scripts now are. You can have names and passwords stuffed in a DB, you can re-size images, you can have comments and FAQs and page editing, all sorts of stuff. But it is difficult and does require alot of time to concept --> Program --> test --> debug --> impliment

I know it takes a lot of time, that's why I already paid 2 years of hosting in advance

I am a rather old programmer, only not with server-side languages like php and dbs like mysql. I am used to html and xhtml, and the wonders of tables. Which is why I wanted to change.

Actually right at the moment I'm wondering whether to let the community aspect be in the site's forum, and only use votes and comments on certain pages, and also have the ability to write articles. Like at www.animeka.com + the ability to have articles.
