PHP cookbook is a great way to go, it is an O'Reilley book.

ISBN: 1-56592-681-1

It teaches PHP pretty much by example, and they have some really usefull examples in there, it is more or less how I learned to work with the language. If you are brand new to PHP and programming in general you might want to go the route of "Learning PHP" which is another O'Reilley book--though I am not sure of the ISBN.
