@teencoder: yes, that's essentially true. There may be a lot more in the object files in order to facilitate their assembly together and to guide the location of their final resting place in memory. There may also be additional debug information if the object files are produced with that end in mind. In the simplest form, however, the object file IS an expression (often in ascii encoded hex) that may be read by, say, an eprom programmer, and the binary values blown into the chip.
