Quite frankly, there is nothing elite about l337, once one has reached puberty and a certain degree of maturity. Just personal opinion, of course. I do know a guy that went through that phase and is now a highly successful finder of exploits in poorly written, well-known applications. Absolutely top-notch young programmer, he is, so I know that the l337 phase isn't fatal
