Well if you want to get down to it, the Mac OS X is just BSD which was an implementaion of Unix, so either way thats right

I know that, but he was implying it was designed first and foremost for the Mac.

Use opengl - it's portable and easier to learn than directX.

You can also use SDL library - using it you can write fully portable program, because SDL can create windows and handle events.
