I disagree with rsnd, VC++ is a very nice compiler, many say it's the best there is. In the new versions the compliance is very well done. The VC2005 express beta is free to download and is very stable. It will come out in november I believe. Why should C++ be better than C#? There are plus and minus sides to both.

C# is a very nice lanuage to work with, but I would recommend learning C++ first, afterwhich C# will be really simple to learn.

@rsnd: I think the troubles between microsoft and sun were to do with the Java VM that ms included in windows, nothing to do with C#.

Microsoft's Java is more J++ than it is C#... although C# has some similarities to Java... but when writing a language, I'm sure its hard to avoid similar concepts.

Hey, Windows is a flash in the pan in OS terms so far, and it was archaic when it first appeared (OK, so the same could be levelled at Linux; but at least it's reconstituted regurgitated tried and trusted technology, eh?). It has crawled from respray to respray for little over two decades - and that's if you count its first incarnation (that CP/M rip-off, QDOS) but I don't think that's much indication that it's here to stay. To paraphrase a fortune cookie, Microsoft operating systems are the hobgoblins of substandard micros.

There'll be champagne corks poppin' around my console when it finally fizzles out. If that's going to take a long time, as you suggest, then what the hey, I'll wait. It's not like I have to use it that often in the meantime.

If you are familier with C, learning C++ would be relatively easy.

For the sake of understanding programs, it is always better to learn C++, as you have to deal with memory management and the likes. This will ease your life in the future, in case you happen to switch to C#.

C# is relatively easy to use because, like Java, it relievs you from the memroy managemnt pains :-)
