Firmware is not related to any programming language. Firmware is software stored in non-volatile memory. The Wickipedia statement that firmware is software embedded in a hardware device is full of horse hockey. All active software lives in a hardware device, whether it's on a hard drive or in volatile or non-volatile memory chips. I guess you could say that source code on a piece of paper is technically software that isn't embedded in hardware, but oh well.
