For my windows OS I just recently I uninstalled my codewarrior IDE for C++ ad Java, and I regret it, since now I realize that the coloring the editors use is a BIG help to spot minor errors while at the same it's easier on the eyes, believe me IDE >> notepad

now for linux, I prefer the editor kate

VIM is some good stuff, I tend to use VIM, gVIM, and KWrite (mostly KWrite) when scripting for something, say like PHP. KWrite has really nice coloring, as does VIM, but it also has code collapsing.

For Linux, vim is tottally enough and beautiful.
For Windows, PSPad is my favourite as it implements useful features like
text differences between files
