Yes, as a matter of fact, I have. I've been bitten by the 'jumbled up mess' of character sets enough times to seriously consider every assumption I might make. If you have written cross-platform programs for any length of time, you'll know that the first assumption you make will be the topic of the first bug report from your biggest customer, at 2:00am, on a Sunday, because any delay in deploying a fix will cost them a fortune. One tries to avoid calls like that.

Ok, Ok, I'll eat my words and just go troll the lounge for the rest of the day. :p

That's the smartest thing I've read in this entire thread.

I've been following this, and I thank you guys for the info - could come in handy one day.

No insult intended of course. I'm just a very stubborn man. These days one isn't likely to see character sets other than those supporting expected sequences anywhere but on exotic systems. However, because C runs on many, if not all, of those exotic systems, it would be a good idea to write robust programs in the face of potential portability problems.

Or you could write robust programs to avoid being nitpicked by stubborn neo-fascist standards nazis like me.

I didn't mean any insult either, though now I re-read my statement I can see how it could be taken that way. To insure me against an angry dragon, I'll say this: I didn't mean you were stupid - I meant the Lounge is the whole point of this forum.

I can't be insulted -- completly immune to that by now, so don't worry about it. And I didn't read you post that way anyway.

DaWei: thanks for the compliment (calling me son!). I feel 40 years younger now
