pearl?? i assume you mean perl, and i honestly feel that its simple enough to just use php, perl may give more freedom but really you don't need it, the error messages and less than helpful and it requires more support to be hosted on the net.

Also, with sites like MySpace, how is the whole messaging other users/users having their own inbox etc. achieved? It baffles me, and it's overwhelming, but I'm sure some of you guys look at it and know exactly what's going on. Care to shed a little light on it for me?

i'm going to producing a private messaging system myself, i understand the syntax of what i need to do i just need to know the commands and get it defined and working.
the way i'm planning to do it is to store the message, username of the sender, and of the reciever and the subject and the time that it was sent in a database with a unique id, also then it will add to the recieving user's list of recieved messages and they will be able to go and view the new message. and erm no i have no idea how long it will take me to get it working, yes i can't type at all well and yes i know i didn't explain very well and more or less just spammed but
