I would think away from the hosting for now....

How much of java do you know? because if you only no a little i would advise starting with java GUI programming which will teach you about event handling etc then moving onto applets but first off you need to get the Object Orientated concepts of java undery your belt, unfortunaly you have to start with the boring before you can do the fun, i mean i can learn guitar tabs but only through learning the theroy can i create music.
