Really, you can start in just about any language you want.

Forget basic, qbasic, pascal.. etc, as they are not widely used.

Starting with C++ / Java would be your best bet.

BASIC is pretty much useless, unless you want to get into Win2000+ administration, than apparently knowing VB and VBScript can be a bit usefull.

Java is something you could probably not due with and instead use C++. Do not worry about Java unless you are getting into website development, or certain aspects of scientific computing.

Perl and PHP is good for scripting, I would recommend PHP first.. definatly. Learn Perl when you need to and are comfortable with other languages.

C++ is a very commonly used language, you will probably want to learn that.. and I have heard that Python is one of the most powerful scripting languages available, though I could not tellyou for myself since I do not plan on learning Python until later this year.

Ideally you can jump into any language you want, you really need to assess at what you want to do with the coding you are learning, and make your decisions there, based on the information you can find about them.

Disclaimer: Im new to this, so, someone with experience please correct this.

From what Ive read, anything 'basic' is not your 'moneys worth', and/or the 'basics' develop bad habits early on which should be avoided at all costs.

I started with Liberty Basic and got through a couple chapters before reading the above and just as quickly put that book down only to download Python and its tutorials, which btw, Im having some great fun in.

Good luck to you.

i personally dont believe basic creates bad habbits but thats just mean. as for basic i dont think it costs much but visual basic does and it is expensive and if you where goin to by it i recommend goin with vb.net and learn that cause vb6 and vb.net are pretty much completely different languages from what i have heard. and .net is the newest one so it would be best to learn there are still alot of jobs that want vb5 and 6 programmers tho
