prolog help

I 've written this:
word(ousiastiko,[L1,L1]):- retract(ous(_)),assert(ous(L1)).

but instead of inserting the specific value for L1 that it is used in the first part of the rule, it reconises L1 in the second part of the rule as a new variable(after this ous succeeds for every value) What's wrong???
