i find that most books assume that you know some other language(even when they don't say so... but most do)as well as thorough knowledge of computers and the inner workings. i once tried to work through a delphi(ewww) book and at one stage i could make nice looking screens with buttons and stuff(and so could a three year old). the next bit that i couldn't find in the book was how to get stuff that the user types in and display it somewhere.

apparently "thinking in java" is nice, but i wouldn't know. usually when i get stuck i go back to the stuff i got during the course. i've also read in various posts and forums that sun has a nice java tutorial.
