you could write an OS more easily with a crayon and toilet paper than using perl or VB. if you really want to do this then go with C++. however, in the meantime i suggest aiming a little lower than that. learning a language is never a waste of time and i hope that you get the best from your course. programming fundamentals are the same language to language. if you study hard then you will easily apply the concepts learned from your into course to much more advanced topics. good luck.
