I'm suggesting look at other free anti-virus software if you can't get AVAST to leave your compiler alone - yes.

AVG also has a free version, with equal performance. I don't know if you can control it any better -- riding the horse, a lot depends on the rider, not just the horse.

On my web site (linformatica.com), you can find for free the sources of a chess board similar to your but with legality check of moves. This were my very first C program, but it could give you some hint.
