canvas or svg?

I need to animate something lets say a butteryfly. I want the wings to flap, i know canvas at a beginner level, and svg knowledge is slim to none. Which way would be the easiest way with javascript.

this would be a .gif image, not drawn with bezier curves or anything.

i also think if you need to animate some thing on canvas than you use .gif extension image
