What kind of Dev language to pickup - help!

Back in the client server days, I did a lot of development in VB and PowerBuilder, I enjoyed it very much. About 5 years ago, I decided to be a project manager and then got a Director job and then a VP job.

Now, I'm consulting and doing PM work. I'd like to get back into development and want to ask if someone could recommend a web langage that would get my feet wet. I'm not interested in C++ as of yet, but can someone recommend a scriptiong or some kind of web language that I could code in, and not spend big $$$ purchasing compilers, etc...something that is free, has a large following and has a lot of material on the internet that I could look at.

I've heard a lot about PHP, or Perl and ASP.Net...what do you guys think?
