I'm not sure if this would do anything, but have you tried doing this:
if(gasCode == 'B' || gasCode =='b')
{
// code
}
// same with all the others add the || gasCode == 'letter'
If you posted the entire code, we could help you better, as we could compile it and take a look at exactly what's going on.
