Game Programmers Must Read

Ok, read this for 30 seconds; it's all it takes!

I've been studying c++ for several months now, and I'm highly interested in game development. Obviously I need more experience and such on programming games before I can really move up into the big stuff, so I'm wondering where I should start?

Please don't suggest books, because I already have too many. Where would a wanna be game programmer start? What steps should I take? How should I go about learning the art of game development?

For 2D games -- www.libsdl.org

And of course, books never hurt.

I know you said no books, but I suggest either finding a really good tutorial, reading a book, or taking a course on either DirectX or OpenGL is a must.

I would recommend you learn a graphics engine(OpenGL is my preference.) Then learning DirectInput, a sound library(FMOD is my preference) then research other open source games. Once you feel comfortable, start on your own. Its a long process, but very satisfying once you are done.
