C is the father/mother of C++ and nowadays is best looked at as a subset of C++. Coming from VB learn C# since C++ can be a real bitch with Windows GUI.

That's just about backwards from how I went with those languages... Although, I was learning C++ and VB concurrently.

If your interested in OO programming, i'd definatly do java. OO in C++ was more laid overtop of the language, sort of an evolution of C, to keep things as backward-compatable as possible. That, and Java is my favorite language, even though i just started it coming from a background of programming in C for 3 years and C++ for around 7

Java is extremely slower than c++ though. Modern games today need c++ because you certainly wouldn't play halo with constant lag and lower animation and frame refresh rates.

screw all that horseshit. you can code C++ procedurally just as you can C. C++ isn't some totally new thing it's just C with added features. if you want to learn OOP then learn C++. you get the same language fundamentals without having to unlearn any syntax. C++ is pretty much the same thing as C if you don't use its features (with a little different "wording").
