You can even use GetDlgItemTexta or GetWindowTexta API's...

True, but those are just wrappers for the WM_GETDLGTEXT and WM_GETTEXT window messages, which offer more flexibility, and will always work, no matter what version of windows.

After reading up on Qt, I realize that API is just so much cooler
Especially the inter-process communication.

Hey hey, just saying!
Maybe you haven't heard of it. KDE uses DCOP (Desktop Communications Protocol) to allow applications to communicate. Correcting my previous statement, DCOP is used by KDE, not Qt, although they are related. Ever wondered how you can have an applet on a panel to control your music player? Run kdcop and check out what you can do. You will likely see a play method amond other things. Open a few text editors, examine them in kdcop, and notice how easy it would be to do what the OP is asking.

I always thought the applets worked using their own DDE-like system or other hacks - Cool
My only gripe is with the hot drink timer thingy though: the tune it plays should be merrier! And it assumes we drink earl grey. Perhaps theres a better solution? (encountered this whilst reading up on the FTP protocol!!!)

We can only hope winblows gets a structured API and renovated interprocess communication system soon.

Actually, Win64 doesn't support Win16. Took 'em long enough...
