hmm...is there anywhere where I can download a trial version for the 2003 edition?

If not, do you have any suggestions to a compiler for VB,JAVA and C++?

SharpDevelop... free .NET IDE will cover C# and VB but not Java. You can get the java compiler, Forte, or Netbeans from Sun for that.

Visual Studio 2005 comes out in August (allegedly, but apparently Longhorn came out in January!). You can get a free beta of all the main components (VB C#, J# and WebDeveloper but unfortunately no C++) off the MSDN Connection website, or if you're in the UK it was out on the PCPlus Cover disc a while back.
Personally I don't see what is really that different, appart from some window dressing: ooh they've added the My namespace in VB, that'll change my life that will.... ahem. Authenticode gets an update, you can actually use the XP visual styles and the improved intellisense is good, if a little slow, but I expect that'll be sorted for the release. Dunno about you but I'm not wasting money on the new version of Enterprise Architect when the amount of money they want could buy you a server!

Nope. It'll be cheaper if you buy the Student Edition or something though.

I'm about to purchase Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2002, is this a good choice for application programming? (or is it just for web programming?)

And is there a huge difference between the 2003 edition and the 2002?
