Scaling a bitmap.

I'm using SDL. I have this start of a battleship game going on here and I have considered inserting a zoom feature to the grid so you could scale the grid in and out like in most art programs such as KolourPaint. I would like the bitmap scaling to be transitional not from 100% viewing to 300% but from 100-200% gradually. I understand that if I do have scaling i'd have to scale other things also like the player and the amount of times he moves on the grid.

Ok let me rephrase this for George since we have not gotton a reply. Basically we want to find another way to use scaling of bitmaps in our SDL programs.

We do know SDL does not have scaling built in so we were wondering if there was another library we can kink into the program with SDL that does contain bitmap scaling?
