Recomended Reading

Hello, i'm looking for a recomendation on what book i should get in order to learn java. I have a little experience with it (in my second quarter), but the new features of 5.0 are a bit unclear to me (scanner class). Any recomendations would be helpful Thanks.

My first Java book was Java By Example... then I grabbed up a 2nd book which was by Dietel and Dietel (this ver was green), also covered Swing concepts... very nice.

The book that my high school uses in Comp Sci is Big Java, by Cay Horstmann. I've heard good reviews for it, but I don't know first-hand how good it is. You might want to look into it.

Talking

usually the sams "teach yourself in 21 days" are pretty decent (and no, 21 days is bullshit, but they're still good books). STAY AWAY from the sams JAVA book, it is written for c/c++ programmers and is worthless to a beginner. check out this website though, it should have everything you could have ever dreamed of for java.

The Horstmann and Cornell "Core Java" books are fantastic. They both cover Java 5, though the 2nd book may have more then you ever really wanted to know about Java!

java 2 blackbook lists all the methods to classes such as String, Array, and Math. However, it is probably best when you understand basic java.
