www.linuxiso.org It has downloads for nearly every major and some small distrobutions. Of course, they're all free.
Open source doesn't have to be free in price, but it is 80 percent of the time. If you're new to Linux, Ubuntu is a newer and very strong option. The installation is a very simple textual wizard (no gui but very easy), great with hardware recognition, has a beautiful default gui setup, and has apt. Apt is one of the best package managers around. edit: THe most important link I can give you: www.tldp.org So many guides. Start with some general newbie guides and read what interests you from there.

You can find a Linux that'll run on almost everything. I'm running Slackware with 700 Mhz and 256 mb ram, which is probably not worth more than the box it comes in anymore. I'm thinking about putting it on my sister's 64 mb, 300 mhz machine.

Yeah... Linux runs on pretty much everything... But it seems to have a failed dependency issue that unables it of running in my brain... Shame on me!
I'm stuck on whatever billy throws at me.. ![]()

debian has a port for a gamecube, so i'm pretty sure you can run it on what you have.

Linux will run on pretty much any hardware with two trouble areas: winmodems and wireless cards. If you're not using either one, you're good to go. And you should be fine all the way back to an old 486. Probably a pentium or k6 if you want to run x (the gui).
