Smile The next step

Hi,
This is a very general post, and since I'm a bit of a n00b to this forum - please be nice.
I've just completed my second year at strathclyde university which entailed completeing an individual project, which (unoriginally) was a rpg style game, which was quite clumsy but still up to the standard required (I actually got quite a good grade in it)
Now the reason I'm boring you all with these details is I'm not really sure what to do during the summer to improve. I had a look at a few programming sites where you're paid to do projects (inparticular rentacoder.com) but even the easiest projects seem above my level.
Does anyone have any idea what I should be doing to improve without picking a project that's over my head.
I can reply to any requests for examples of my (limited) experience.
Laura.

Make your game less "clumsy"?

Honestly? Pick a project that's over your head.
Be reasonable about how far over your head it is, but really the only way you'll expand your bounds is by doing things that are currently beyond your experience level. Learning how to learn those things will serve you well beyond a single project or programming language. Get comfortable reading the API docs and familiarize yourself with the common idioms of the API through examples. The best way to really absorb new concepts is to try to apply them.
