My apologies for the false statement, I didn't think back far enough.

Just as a side note, while performance is important, it's only one of various reasons why these languages are preferred. Also, the Linux kernel contains no C++ last I checked. C++ code compiles into a much less predictable mess than C, which is one of the reasons why this choice was made.

Re: Best programming language

I chose JAVA.
I took the approach of what is my favourite language to code in (actually find it fun), I wasn't thinking of things like performance.
My favourite language for performance is Assembly, still a noob at it though.
When it comes to using programming languages, it really comes down to what your software is to do.
I code mostly in C++ for assignments for school etc. Over 70% of the stuff i have coded has been in C++. I HATE it though, sure everyone is using it and I'm okay at it. But it doesn't have that edge like JAVA. Sure, I wouldn't use JAVA to make a game for playstation of course, but with JAVA I can relax and I don't have to worry about pointers and all that lower level stuff.

Re: Best programming language

I'm kinda surprised to how poorly C# is doing in this poll. I knew C/C++ would do great, but i figured C# would be a close second. and by the looks of it, i probably shouldnt have included perl, cobol, or ruby

Re: Best programming language

Yeah, COBOL is a bit old school. Used alot in the industry though, but I know no one who codes in it for fun. If they did, they would be pretty sad and single.

that about sums it up. No fun in COBOL. I love it when I'm asked to program in C or rexx or python.

Re: Best programming language

I chose C/C++ because C++ seems to have at least the basics of lower- and high- level programming. This makes it efficient for almost all programming tasks. May not be the easiest for all task's but it seems to me to be the most efficient when it comes to its abilities in speed and memory handling(be it somewhat crude ).
