Re: Best programming language

It would really depend on the software being developed. Saying that programming language Foo is better than the Bar language is like saying that a hammer is better than a screwdriver. Using that analogy, I'd say that "use the right tool for the job" would apply here.

I interpreted the word "best" here as "having the greatest impact on computer science and software development". So I chose C/C++, as in my opinion they have been the most prolific, influencial, and important languages.

Re: Best programming language

As Sorrofix said it really depends on what you are developing. I am going to vote C++ as it is my favourite language to develop in (followed by C#).

Re: Best programming language

i think the hammer/screwdriver analogy is way off. it is more like asking would it be better to write your love letter in german or italian. all the languages can express the same thing, but some might be more beautiful than others.

Re: Best programming language

I have to agree with Sorrofix on this one. Use the best tool for the job wherever applicable.

I still believe C is the building blocks for all other languages though.

If you wanted to, you could use a screwdriver to bang in nails. It just wouldn't be very efficient.

I think based on what you say, "having the greatest impact on computer science and software development", that a few of the above languages could fit this description because i think that PHP is a hugely powerful language for web development where as C/C++ is really powerful and fast for applications hence why operating systems (e.g linux kernel) are programmed in this.

The Hammer/Screwdriver analogy is a good way of putting it i think, personally i feel that the question could be interpreted in 2 ways, Which language is best as in most suited to a task. and which language is best as in greatest impact on the computer world...

Not really. Assembler and/or machine opcodes are the real building blocks ... they were used to build the first compilers before C was even thought of.
