Re: software developers?

Can you not develop a website by yourself?

Re: software developers?

I think he may be talking about local applications versus websites. I prefer doing local apps far more than websites. Creating websites can be quite tedious. I have done a couple websites in ASP.net that were fun to do though.

Re: software developers?

The thing I hate about developing websites is designing the interface. It's a serious issue for me, I don't know about you guys.

Re: software developers?

To answer your question, noob, I make programs, but their little rinky dink simple-minded things as I'm still learning. The extent of my web programming is html, and I've already forgot half of that stuff from lack of use.

Re: software developers?

I feel the opposite, OpenLoop. I wish I could write app GUIs in XML. There's a language called XAML which makes this possible with .NET, but that's not entirely helpful as I'm quite enjoying Python on my Mac right now. HTML + CSS 3 (which should be out, damnit: it's got so many improvements) is brilliant.

Re: software developers?

Developing the interface of a website is hard. You never realize how many little details go into a single web page until you try to code one yourself. Coding the backbone of a website is much better; it's straightforward work and not nearly as much tweaking or browser compatibility to worry about.

Then again... I tend to be lazy when creating my own content management systems and just grab a premade one, like Drupal, which cuts down the amount of coding I have to do (and interface modifications). Then all I have to do is focus on content.

As to the original question, developing standalone applications is far more enjoyable for me. They're faster to run, easier to create, and overall a lot more straightforward in the development process.

You look into IronPython if you've got a .NET development machine laying around. I'm pretty sure there's a way to work in WPF with IronPython, and I know Silverlight 2 supports it (not sure how to create the project though ).

On topic: Developing client-side apps takes more investment than a website, and is harder to deploy. Websites can be easily created, rebuild (and re-deployed) and you know what version your users are looking at when they say something's wrong. But yes, people do still build client applications, even by themselves. You just hear more about developing websites these days.

actually the point I was trying to make was people are more inclined to use websites now compared to software....

for example, forums affected popularity of messengers....

see what I mean?

so what kind of "local" apps do you develop?
