Re: Vista RAM Ussage
Don't worry. Internet Explorer 7, alone, uses 1/4 gigs of RAM for me.
Even though that's only when it freezes up... that's still most of the time. |

Re: Vista RAM Ussage
I wasn't. Like most web developers, I was really hoping IE7 would be good enough that I wouldn't have to spend an extra few days making sure my site worked in it. No such luck. IE8 holds promise, but we don't know how much yet.

IE6? I thought you'd know better... (and yes, that's a serious observation)

Re: Vista RAM Ussage
After using VISTA for a while, I'm slowly going towards LINUX. I used to like the operating systems from mircosoft, I thought XP and 98 were pretty good, now VISTA ... why? What were they thinking! I've seen better releases of LINUX and Ubuntu that suck less!

Re: Vista RAM Ussage
I'm happy with Vista, and I've been using it for six months now. Never had a single hard/soft lock or blue screen. I like the sidebar and the gadgets hold promise with it's potential interactivity (it's nice to be able to use post-it notes on my screen inside the OS at a glance versus having to write things down on paper or having to open up a document; or to glance at the weather or a performance module without hassle.) Installed all my old software without a hitch and I've never had any performance issues.
You'll find that 90% of gripes are because old software/hardware wasn't/isn't compatible with Vista and they get frustrated and are quick to say "zomg vista sucks lawls upgrade to xp." Innovations are never a bad thing and sacrifices in some shape or form are always commonplace. I'd love a hybrid car, but I'm sure if/when we ever come out with the technology on a scale that makes it affordable to the common person, there will be quirks, we'll have to deal with the small-scale distribution and having to go to particular places for our fuel instead of finding one on every corner (for a while), and adapting in general and paying something costly. Now of course if you have a legitimate issue with Vista, by all means, downgrade or switch. But don't ever be quick to judge a book by it's cover.. Look at the big picture, not the small.

Re: Vista RAM Ussage
I like Vista, I feel it's pretty stable. Every Windows I've ever had, including 2k and XP, would have to be rebooted after being up for more than a week; worst was ME. It had to be rebooted every day or other day and I could count on reinstalling it every 3 or 4 months. Pretty much the only time I reboot Vista is for updates; it's been up for weeks at a time without issue.

Re: Vista RAM Ussage
Any specific gripes? You've offered your opinion, but I'm curious as to the reasons behind it.

Re: Vista RAM Ussage
I've used vista for 4 months on my new Laptop. Memory usage was at 40% most of the time and 5~15 minutes after boot, the harddisk will still be grinding. So, I decided to downgrade to Windows XP and dualboot with Ubuntu 8.04. Things are running a lot faster and smoother, and I can almost hear the harddisk whispering "thanks for saving my life".
