Well, my explanation would be something like:
-Tell me any program that you like to use on a computer
-<SomeProgram>
-Well, programmers are the people who make this.

It may be a silly explanation, but it's the best I can give to someone who doesn't understand and may confuse you for a geek when he/she hears the magic word "computers".
