Smile Hello all...

hello all,

looks like even people who start threads in this section have had at least some background in programming.unfortunately i'm an odd one

i'm a 17 year-old asian guy having no formal learning in programming but i have some interest in learning it. i've been trying to learn from some tuts found online, but can seem to "get it"

so i was loafing around and found this amazing site. hopefully i can at least "get a glimpse" about programming here and be able to stay for quite a long time here

Re: Hello all...

Welcome to the forums,

We all started out not knowning anything about programming at some point. I still know little about programming however but i am learning slowly and thats the best way.

Have you had any thoughts as to what language you would like to look at as a starting point?

There is plenty of help avaliable on these forums so just ask if you need anything and imsure someone will be able to solve your problem.

Chris

Re: Hello all...

Welcome myanyx!
Advice: Your probably going to get alot of advice were you should start (eg start with python, go from HTML and onwards, go with C++, go for VB). My advice is this: start with any programming language you want, the trick is to implement what you know from one language into another.

Re: Hello all...

thanks,

i did read about reviews on languages, and i decided to start of with python.mostly because of it's more readable and more recommended for beginners (even Eric S. Raymond recommends python as beginner's language )

Re: Hello all...

Good choice, also one bonus to Python as a starting language is that it teaches good programming technique's i guess ill see you in the Python forum before long then.

Wise choice.
Just enjoy programming for the time being. Don't take it seriously just yet, until you go to college and start working, that's a long way off for you.

I disagree with you there. You don't have to go to college to take programming seriously... I started taking it seriously when I was 16 and got a few jobs out of it.

'Course, I was messing around for a few years before that. Don't take it seriously until you're sure you want to put a hell of a lot of time into it.

Everyone has there opinion dude, I'm just using my own life as an example.
I studied art in between high school and college, it took a while before I realized programming is my future. Most people have a time in their life when they are confused.

Re: Hello all...

If your planning on learning Python, buy Python Programming for the Absolute Beginner. It's a super friendly and easy to follow book, which is how I am learning right now.

Re: Hello all...

thanks for all the suggestions given here,

well, i don't think i'll study programming for education, i'll just treat programming as my hobby to kill my free times. (somehow i find gaming kinda boring, lol)
