I like classics too, but not most opera probably because I can't understand what they are saying. I hate heavy metal, but that's probably just a generational thing.

I've never like Opera (or any classical vocal stuff).

I doubt it's generational, or I was simply born in the wrong era. Can't stand much of anything considered "metal," heavy or not...

Personally, I listen to a lot of techno, dance, and foreign pop; the latter mainly because I can't understand the words, so the lyrics don't distract me nearly as much...

I like to listen to Postal Service, most of their music calms me down and makes me tired.

Re: What music do you listen to when programming?

I like to listen to a broad spectrum of music while coding and using my computer in general. The list of music that you'll find in my current play list, listed by artists & favourite (desc):

30 Seconds to Mars
Queens of the Stone Age
Daft Punk
The Killers
Bullet For My Valentine
Bloc Party
Incubus
Audioslave
Anti Flag
Ill Nino
Disturbed
Tupac
Kanye West
Rise Against
Against All Authority
[lots of other artists]

I like to explore genres, my favorite genre is indie rock/alternative rock.

Re: What music do you listen to when programming?

Typically, I start out listening to my mp3 library on shuffle... hard rock, no metal, very little rap/hip hop, mostly techno, trance, and lounge... and some nice jazz.

If I start to get tired, I'll stick my chill mix on... a bunch of "smooth" electronica songs that I can tune out just as easily as I can sing along with.

If I encounter a nasty bug, it gets real quiet, real quick.

Re: What music do you listen to when programming?

I listen to most everything, with the exception of country. Hard core coding is usually done in techno or trance... the fewer words the better.

I prefer silence, especialy if I need to consentrate.
Sometimes I'll put some soft music to cover my pc fans' noise, other than that, heavy stuff while gaming.
