To really understand Java, I'd recommend reading on how to think in Object Oriented Design and Analysis... I'm still trying to find a good read on the topic. =p

Oh and as for a good editor. Personally I love jEdit.

As a student I learned basic Java with JGrasp which is available at http://www.jgrasp.org/ for a more advanced IDE, try Eclipse which is available at http://www.eclipse.org/.
